Grocery Prices for Floridians
If you walk through your local Publix, you might notice that your favorite groceries are still holding on to that higher-than-normal sticker price. As March came to an end, it’s worth noting that overall food prices have increased about 1% since January—not ideal for shoppers as March 2023 also capped off a 6.9% increase since March 2022.
In 2022, a family of four in the state of Florida spent an average of $1,296 per month on groceries according to The Bureau of Economic Analysis (about $324 per month, per person). On a scale to define average household expenditures, most surveys rank Florida right outside the top 10 most expensive. Florida being in the top half of that list might not come as a shock to most, especially as demand for state residency continues to increase.
By the Numbers
According to the Council for Community and Economic Research, this is how the price of groceries ranks by major city across the state of Florida. These numbers are reported through the second quarter of 2022.
This index comes along with a general cost-of-living index of around 101 according to most statistics. But it’s worth noting that most of these statistics are calculated with the most recent available data which is typically a year old at minimum. It will be very interesting to see how the general cost-of-living index has increased once we have data that can quantify the surge in Florida residency over the past 24 months.
